Why smart homes are no longer superfluous in the world

May 16, 2019

The idea of  an ideal home that could listen to you, talk to you, perform tasks by your commands has been around for a long time. We have seen it on many movies, portrayed as the tech of the future. Now though, we can say that the future has finally arrived.

A lot of it has to do with the recent explosion of information technology. Faster and affordable internet, computers and mobile devices all over the world has introduced a broader view into the connected digital world to people, giving unprecedented immersion into environments of convenience, knowledge, and accessibility.

Smart homes, a part of the Internet of Things(IoT) is a home that uses internet-connected devices to enable the remote monitoring and management of appliances and systems.

They were once considered to be part of a luxurious lifestyle, but are now slowly becoming an important part of our lives. With the popularity of virtual assistants like Amazon’s Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple’s Siri etc the users simply integrate these devices to their smart homes and literally talk to their home and get things done. While it may have first started off as a cool feature for bragging rights, the convenience and safety aspects are slowly changing the way people think about smart home systems.

No, I'm not saying that it's not cool anymore, the Iron-man esque feeling that it gives, when they walk into a room and say, "Turn on the lights" or "bring the fan speed to 50%" or "Set the A\C to 21 degrees" and actually see things happen for real is super cool. It is in fact one of the most marketed benefits of smart home systems. They do come in handy, especially when you're too comfortable in bed and feeling lazy to get up and switch off the lights. With voice commands or just a few taps on your mobile, you can control the lights and other appliances that are connected.

If we are talking about being practical, the advantage is that you can now set the living room to the ideal temperature even 'before' you arrive home from work. Just waiting for the A\C to kick in and cool the room is now a thing of the past. You can even schedule tasks like these and a whole lot more if you think there is a pattern you follow. A good example is switching on the outside lights by around 7 pm daily and switching them off by 12 am. Just schedule it from the smartphone and it's done.

Starting charge cycles, switching on the oven, and getting the food prepped, playing music around the home; all possible remotely, with just a few taps on the phone or with your own voice.

Another thing is that with smart home devices, you can significantly reduce your household tasks, like not having to rush to the door every time someone rings the doorbell. See who is at the front door from your Smartphone screen and unlock the door remotely or issue instructions via your Smartphone. This is just an example of the several time-saving features of smart home devices. Simply put, a smart home system can help you increase productivity and reduce the average time you spend on household tasks.

The major convenience part of smart homes are of course remote access and by far it is the most useful of all the features.

Because let's face it, who have not wondered on the way to work if the geyser or that curling iron was turned off? Or the microwave oven after heating breakfast?

Rather than heading back home or calling in on someone to check, you could simply check the current status remotely if you have a smart home system installed. You can remotely monitor your home appliances and ensure that all devices are safely switched off.

Now if we are talking about safety, the advantages of smart home automation are numerous. It keeps your place secure by preventing accidental fires, shocks, energy wastage etc. Smart homes help you in saving money as well. Your energy bills are reduced as you can remotely turn off devices, that you aren’t using. This is a huge convenience, and you can have power savings as well as complete control of household devices, without any extra effort. Sweet!

After convenience, the focus of smart home devices shifts to security, in the form of Smart door locks. How often have you rushed for work in the morning, only to remember an hour later that you forgot to lock the front door? Now, put an end to all those confusions, as the automated door locks shut behind every time you or a family member leaves the place.

Additionally, smart door locks also lets you to remotely unlock the door for visitors or elders, even when you aren’t at home. You also receive real-time alerts to your Smartphone on who is entering your home, even if you aren’t there. Smart door locks enhance the overall security of your home.

Along with smart locks, the tech that ensures peace of mind is Smart surveillance. It is a relatively newer aspect of home automation systems. You can quickly track what’s happening live, both inside and outside the home and unlike the traditional surveillance  systems, where the footage comes to use only after any mishap happens, the smart home surveillance system let's you know of a potential threat in advance. With the help of motion detectors and Image processing, the smart home automation system can detect the presence of an intruder or suspicious onlooker lurking around the property and lets you know right away, so that you can alert concerned security authorities and prevent potential break-ins and robberies.

You also have the convenience of choosing when you want this feature to be active, for example, scheduling the feature to be online only after 10 pm up to 6 am or while you aren’t there. With live stream data from camera's, you can keep an eye on who is arriving at your home and yes, the system is smart enough to detect whether the presence is that of a human or a cat/dog. This helps not to give out false alarms. We can say that It's like having your personal home security guard, but easier on the pocket and one that never dozes off while on duty.

Installing smart home devices not only offers you peace of mind, knowing that your home is safe and secure but also provides you stress free time to spend with your loved ones, instead of laboring over boring everyday household tasks.
